I kept at it because I really enjoyed the Richard Cypher and Kahlan Amnell characters and their relationship. The Sword of Truth series is strictly for adult readers, IMO. The first book in the series really grabbed me. However, I will agree with xmiyux that some of the torture stuff especially by the Mord-Sith in Wizard's First Rule was tough to read Goodkind must be a strange person. He meets his real father, his uncle, gets captured by women of faith, and magic that was once forgotten comes back into the world.
In Chainfire, the explanation of the magic is complicated and rather confusing. Richard finds out the truth of his lineage. The Sword of Truth series has become more political and philosophical as it has grown. Over the course of the series of books Richard and Kahlan fall in love. The Sword grants strength and power to the wielder, but prevents the harming of someone they think of as an innocent. Together they look into the murder of Richards father, as he gains the Sword of Truth, earning the title of Seeker of the Truth. They go back to meet up with Richard's friend, Zedd. Kahlan is saved by a young woods guide called Richard Cypher. The first of the books, Wizard's First Rule, starts off by introducing you to a young woman, Kahlan Amnell, desperate to escape from four men chasing her. The Sword of Truth series of books by Terry Goodkind are definitely examples of this genre handled well.
It's a pretty common theme in Fantasy novels, but rarely is it done well. Young kid grows up normal and then comes to find out that he's something special and gets to change the world.
